In October 2018, Taranaki Rugby Women’s 7 star Iritana Hohaia travelled to the Youth Olympic Games 2018 in Buenos Aries to represent New Zealand in the U18 Rugby 7's Women’s team.
Iritana received a $1,500 Individual Grant from the Trust to enable her to attend – here’s what Iritana had to say about her experience!
“The youth Olympics was amazing! I was so fortunate to have been selected and am grateful to the TSB Community Trust for the huge contribution toward my journey.
The games were huge with at least 4,500 competitors and staff staying in the village. You learned very quickly how important scheduling and timekeeping were.
Meeting athletes from all around the world was humbling, particularly some of the stories and journeys athletes took to get to the games with no or little funding.
Every country had pins from our nations to exchange and I ran out of pins in the first few days bringing home a pin from almost every nation.
The competition, the team trainings were next level hard and fuelled my desire to make 2020.
The success of New Zealand for all the athletes involved was something I am extremely proud to have been a part of.
As for the city, the little we did see was so exciting. The culture the language and the people were vibrant extremely receptive to the games and I would love to visit again.”
“Once again thank you so much for your support.”
